Indexers are recommended to read this book, both to gain a vivid picture of the book trade hitherto, and to see the idiosyncratic ideas of indexing desiderata held by an author and publisher (and frequent index user) who has been long at the heart of it.

I find it irresistible. His ten biographical essays cover legendary figures of the British book trade in the second half of the 20th century. ... Ian knew them all well, and has introduced into each of his essays his own experience of the subjects.... I highly recommend this book.
