As usual with Buchan, a finely-written adventure story. This novel is set in the late seventeenth century in a Scotland riven by religious hatred. The descriptions of the landscape are as marvellous and engaging as ever, and right from the start one knows that the hero, Andrew Garvald, will win through and win the fair lassie. Still, that foreknowledge didn't in any way impair my enjoyment of the book. ( )
