Nice book. I could imagine if i read it shortly after losing a dog i would cry my eyes out. What i think would be better would be to tead it to children while the dog is healthy to help prepare them for the eventual end. Illustrations are fine but not amazing works of art.
I received this as a gift from the emergency veterinary clinic that cared for my 12 year old Labrador, Pilot, in the weeks before I had to say goodbye. Lots of tears were shed when this arrived on my door step, as it is signed with condolences by the staff. It's a beautiful book, but I don't think I'll ever be able to open it a second time.
Comforting to those who know the pain and grief associated with the loss of a pet, Rylant paints a lovely picture of dog heaven where fields abound, with lots of room to run.
God watches from behind a tree as geese honk and dogs chase. Knowing dogs love children, dog heaven is filled with children who play ball and fly kites to the clouds. Dogs sleep on fluffy clouds and eat ham sandwich biscuits.
Dogs remember their previous owner and sometimes an angel walks them back to earth for a temporary time of joy.

I wish the art was less naive in style, but the story is very affecting (makes me cry) and the characters appear racially diverse. Dogs deserve all the love!
A touching story about where dogs go after their time on earth has ended. Anyone who has ever felt a special connection with a dog will adore this book. It offers comfort and closure for any child (or adult) who has lost a beloved pet and wishes to know more about life after death. The illustrations are done in acrylic and seem almost to have been done by a child, which only makes the tale more whimsical and precious. A beautiful story about love, loss, and life.

I'm an atheist, but I still love this book and its companion. Sensitive, warm, and can be appreciated by pet owners whether or not they've lost their 4-footed friend.
