When Mandie arrives at a private boarding school, she finds little in common with the other girls, until she meets late arrival Celia. They want to investigate the mysterious sounds they hear coming from the attic, but in order to do so, they must break one of the school's rules. A little old rule isn't going to stop Mandie. Mandie and Celia eventually are punished with a 10-day suspension at which time Mandie meets her maternal grandmother who is a very delightful character! The girls still have not had time to investigate, but Mandie is determined to do so when they return. Will they find the source of the noise? or will they get in even greater trouble with the headmistress? This is the type of book I would have enjoyed reading as a show more pre-teen. I'm not sure it will work as well with today's pre-teens. show less
Now this is the Mandie that I remember.

One of the things that I have noticed in rereading this series is that they are a lot more cheesy than I had previously remembered. Of course because I read the series so long ago, this was to be expected, but the first three books have been especially poorly paced.

This book was definitely more of what I think of when I remember reading Mandie. This book and the one that follows were two of my favorites, and I genuinely enjoyed reading the Forbidden Attic.

Mrs. Taft is a lovely addition to the cast (we first meet her in this book) and I just love all of her sass and awesomeness!

I'm pretty sure (my memory is a little foggy) that this is the first Mandie book I ever read and what made me read more of it and love the series growing up. I can't stand the style of writing now and the racism is so blatant it hurts, but I have fond memories of Mandie and her adventures.
Mandie has just arrived at Mrs. Heathwoods school for girls and isn't liking it to much.
Alone, homesick and slightly afraid, Mandie meets Celica Hamilton, her new friend.
But night after night, they hear strange noises in the attic. What could be making them?
