Winter urges us to snuggle up with a good book, shutting out the cold and reconnecting with our impulse to nest. What a lovely idea, then, this collection is: The Winter Book celebrates the coldest season -- from the late days of fall and Halloween to the earliest days of spring and Groundhog Day. Including prose from lauded authors, songs like Mozart's "My Little Apple" and "We Three Kings of Orient Are," and informational texts on international celebrations like Chinese New Year, Kwanzaa, Diwali, and Dia de los Reyes, this compendium reminds us of that magical season between autumn and spring. I'm always surprised how in North America such books are so difficult to find (mostly out of print and forgotten), and in Canada I can only buy the French edition. There is such a big difference between the European and American children's literature traditions, and not much of the best European children's literature is getting translated into English. Such a shame. ( )
