Tozer never disappoints, and this book is my favorite of his. He addresses some of this issues of the church in his day that are still very much relevant in present time. One being that many followers know God's Word, yet do not know the Spirit behind it. They have memorized Scripture and can recite it at any moment, yet they have ignored the "heavenly quality" of the message. He goes into much more depth on this topic and fleshes it out well.

He points out the importance of knowing God's character in relation to His promises to us. He states, "What would happen if every preacher just preached about the person and character of God for an entire year-who He is, His attributes, His perfection, His being, the kind of God He is and why we show more love Him and why we should trust Him? I tell you, God would soon fill the whole horizon, the entire world. Faith would spring up like grass by the water courses. Then let a man get up and preach the promises of God and the whole congregation would join in chorus: 'We can claim the promises; look who made them!' This is the confidence, this is the boldness." (pg. 45-46)

This last highlight is about moral degeneration and Tozer relates it to gangrene: "If a man has gangrene in his leg and he can get enough people to glorify it and pay him to exhibit it and write books and poems about it and sing songs about it, he may be able to glorify gangrene. But that will not change the nature of gangrene. It will still kill him... When we violate the laws of God and bring pollution to the purest springs of the race, when we build that moral pollution into our reasoning and write books and plays about it and honor it, when we continue to compromise on this issue and then excuse and justify our compromising, we are glorifying something that in time will kill us." (pg. 124-125)
