De pianostemmer

Patricia and Patrice, twin children of the piano tuner Frederic Delacroix, have run away from home, and from each other, but return to Berlin when their father is arrested for the murder of an Italian tenor during the last act of Tosca. For reasons that are not entirely made clear to start with, they decide each to write down their separate accounts of how the family got to this point, then meet again, briefly, to exchange manuscripts.
The narrative thus consists of an alternating sequence of notebooks, one by Patrice then one by Patricia.

As in Nachtzug nach Lissabon, Mercier's main interest seems to be in the narrative process, the way that a character is brought to life by a series of intersecting accounts. The technique doesn't work show more quite as well as in the more recent book: possibly because Patrice and Patricia are too close to each other. In the later chapters, they seem to lose their individual voices altogether, and their parents take over the narrative.

Failure is a central theme, which doesn't exactly liven things up. Frederic, although at the top of his profession as a piano tuner, is a complete failure as a composer of operas. His wife, Chantal, has had to abandon her career as a ballet dancer after a road accident; Chantal's mother and grandmother, respectively a pianist and a dancer, were both frustrated in their careers by illness. Linked to the discussion of failure is the idea of revenge: this is illustrated mostly through the plot of Frederic's last opera, based on Kleist's novella Michael Kohlhaas, in which a small, provincial horse dealer takes up arms against the Saxon establishment after a thoughtless aristocrat ruins him commercially.

There's a lot of interesting and thought-provoking material here, but I didn't find that it grabbed my attention in the same way that Nachtzug nach Lissabon did. show less

This book is proof that even a melodramatic plot can, in the hands of a superb writer, become a meaningful and compelling story. The composition with alternating accounts of the twins Patrice and Patricia, allows the story to be woven intricately, with enough tension to make you want to read on.. The disadvantage of using only the twin's point of view is that the other characters, like the parents, seem flat and stereotyped
No, the book is not as well rounded as ¨Night train to Lisbon¨ or ¨Perlman's silence¨, but i is a enjoyable, be it a somewhat disturbing read.

Engaging but a bit strange

Ein berühmter italienischer Tenor wird während der Aufführung von Puccinis "Tosca" auf offener Bühne erschossen.

Kirja, josta olisin mielelläni pitänyt mutta joka enimmäkseen onnistui vain pitkästyttämään minua. Keski-ikäinen kääntäjä ja kustantamon omistaja saa vääräksi osoittautuvan aivokasvaindiagnoosin. Virheen paljastuttua hänen elämänsä on jo ehtinyt mullistua, mutta onko se välttämättä huono asia? Kuollelle vaimolle kirjoitetut kirjeet hyppäsin kokonaan yli. De Pianostemmer is een heel ander boek dan Nachttrein naar Lissabon. Het boek bevatte voor mij veel 'ingrediënten waar ik wat mee heb' en dus graag over lees. Zo ben ik zelf de helft van een eeneiïge tweeling en ken dus de specifieke band, houd ik erg van klassieke muziek en daarbinnen van opera. Daarnaast gaat het boek ook over woorden: "Kun je met wat je eenmaal hebt verwoord verder leven zoals tot dusver? Of is het stille bezig zijn met woorden de effectiefste manier om het leven te veranderen - effectiever dan de hevigste explosie?", aldus Patricia....
Het boek leest absoluut anders dan Nachttrein naar Lissabon. Dit boek is veel minder filosofisch, maar de thema's zijn mooi. Op een gegeven moment vond ik het boek ook spannend en show more dat leidt af van de vaak mooie teksten, want dan versnelt het lezen, althans bij mij. Het einde vond ik wat abrupt en mager ten opzichte van de rest van het boek en de rijk uitgewerkte thema's. Het terugwinnen van hun autonome bestaan, samengepropt in een paar regels geeft een gevoel van gemis, verlies van een blik op de toekomst en maakt het thema wat ongeloofwaardig. Mooie melodieën behoeven niet altijd tot een toegankelijk muziekstuk te leiden; fraaie zinnen evenmin tot een goed verhaal. Mercier is een knappe verhalenschrijver doch met deze roman mengt hij “té veel tot té weinig” en geeft de lezer te vaak aanleiding om de concentratie naar elders te laten gaan, terwijl het thema van dit werk wel erg laat aan de horizon verschijnt. Het boek kent prachtige passages doch deze zijn niet voldoende om het gehele boek te kunnen dragen. Muziek, met name opera, zijn belangrijke ingrediënten maar komen uiteindelijk niet tot een prominente rol, anders gezegd: boek en muziek missen de noodzakelijke wederzijdse congruentie waardoor het allemaal wel wat gekunsteld overkomt.
