I Have a Sister, My Sister is Deaf

This story is about a girl who has a younger sister is deaf. She loves her little sister and the reader can tell she wants to protect her. She explains all the positive things her sister can do even though she does live with this disability. For example, she can play the piano. The book just explains that she can do most things other children can do, she may just have to do it a little differently.

I loved this book because the reader can really sense how much the narrator loves her little sister. It would be a good book to read if you want to get a perspective on the way children who are deaf live. The reader will learn that it is not much different from everyone else.

This is a great book about a child with disability, I think it really adds a new perspective because the story is told through the older sister who interacts with her sister and her deafness everyday. She really understands the advantages and disadvantages of her younger sister's disability and has even found things that her younger sister can do better than her. Or what she sees, her sister sees more because her sight is better without the use of her ears. i especially love how she states what her sister can do first then says what she cannot after, the positive before the negative. It really affected me when she said her sister can play the piano but she cannot hear the tune, some people would say what's the point but the fact that show more she overcame her deafness and learned is inspiring to me. I also love when the other kids were asking questions about her deafness and her older sister answered every question with patience. She understood that some children have never been exposed to disabilities and knows that it is better to educate then to get upset at their lack of knowledge. Wonderful book, I would definitely use it if I ever find the need to teach young kids about disabilities and deafness. show less

This book is told from the point of view of a sister of a deaf person. She gives us, the readers, a real life account of what it is like to live with and care for a deaf person. Even though her sister can do plenty things, like play the piano and run and tumble and look for deer, there are plenty things that she cannot. She will never be able to hear the telephone ring or the knocking at the door. This book makes it plain and clear that limitations placed on an individual by a disability is just that, a limitation. It is important that this aspect of being disabled is highlighted. The little girl has a sister and her sister is deaf. But the love that they share for each other speaks volumes.

A simple, beautiful story between two sisters who spend their day together, do everyday tasks, and help each other out. One sister happens to also be dead. A good introductory book for children who have little or no knowledge, prior to the book, about this group of people. It's a well done and respectful, although this is only one perspective and that of the sister. I would like to find a picture book from the viewpoint of the person who is deaf.

This lovely story shows the relationship between two young sisters, one who is deaf. What I particularly liked about this story is that while showing what her deaf sister is unable to do/hear, it also shows what she is able to do. For example, when playing is the grassy lot behind the house, her sister is not able to hear the animals moving but she is able to look for sudden movements in the grass. I also liked how other children in the story were interested in the younger deaf sister but never rude or unkind and the older sister answered their questions with patience and helped them understand that although her sister is deaf, she is still capable all doing the same things that they do. The front cover of this book is black and white with a little girl who looks sad. So before I read this book, I anticipated a sad story. However, when I started reading the book, I realized it was a sweet story about a girl and her deaf sister and the wonderful relationship they have with one another. Even though the story focuses on what her deaf sister can do, the book also touches on what her sister will never be able to do. The book's illustrations were all in black and while. However, I think the illustrator portrayed the book that was because her sister is deaf and she is missing that part of her life. When we as readers do not see color, we are missing a part of our life. I really enjoyed reading this sweet story of the wonderful show more relationship between these two sisters. show less

I LOVED this book. I think that this would be a wonderful tool to use in your classroom whether you had a hearing impaired child or not. This book tells a beautiful story of a little girl who is deaf and her brother. The story does a wonderful job explaining that even though the little girl may cannot hear, that does not mean that she is not good at other things. I loved the part in the book that stated that when her and her brother went to look for deer in the field, he was able to hear them coming, but she was able to see the grass move. A wonderful book to read to any age group of children.
