Cowboy Small by Lois Lenski
Daily life of a cowboy. Love the terms used and explained and what the jobs entail as the cowboy does them.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device). ( )

This is Contemporary Fiction. This is classic tale of a little cowboy's adventures. This is a story about Cowboy Small. Cowboy Small knows what it is to be a cowboy. He lives on a ranch and takes care of his horse, Cactus. Cowboy Small and Cactus live the good life. Cactus helps Cowboy Small get work done on the range. Together they round up cattle for branding. At night, Cowboy Small eats at the chuck wagon, sings with his friends, and sleeps under the stars. The story gives readers insight to what it is like on a ranch.
Personal Reflection
This story took me back to when I was a child and lived on a farm. I could relate to a lot of the things Cowboy Small did to help.
Classroom Extension Ideas
1. Ask students if they or anyone they know lives on a ranch or farm and share if they have chores.
2. Show a video of a cattle run.
3. With permission, take the students on a field trip to a farm for a tour. There are usually farms that encourage visits. ( )

Cowboy Small is a great book just like the rest of the series that Lois Lenski wrote. Cowboy Small lives the life of a cowboy. He enjoys his time being a cowboy. Children who lives on a farm or wants to become a cowboy or cowgirl would enjoy this book. ( )
