lucyknows Muriel's Wedding could be paired with Tess of the D'Urbervilles as well as several other novels, such as, My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and even with Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing

This is supposedly a comedy, but we found it dark and somewhat depressing. There are so many hard issues covered, from theft, deception, verbal abuse, promiscuity and worse. Toni Collette is excellent as the frumpy Muriel, and the supporting cast is also very good. But there aren't many lightweight scenes to balance the heaviness.

It was an engrossing film with a somewhat positive ending, but it didn't leave us feeling uplifted or entertained. The rating is 15, which is about right; there are quite overt sexual scenes (albeit with nothing explicit) and quite a bit of bad language, though not excessive. But the subject matter isn't at all appropriate for children or younger teens.

Not something I expect to watch again, and not one I'd show more recommend. But it's very popular in some circles, and won awards, so don't necessarily take my word for it.
