spirited story about an unconventional, adventurous girl named Pippi who lives alone with her horse and monkey, defying societal norms with her quirky personality. Astrid Lindgren’s whimsical storytelling and Pippi’s fearless independence make it a joyful and empowering read for young readers.
Brilliant to read and chill out at the same time. 3 Books in one, the first book introduces you to Pippi Longstocking, the 2nd book 'Pippi in the South Seas', tells of her travels to the South Seas where she and her friends Tommy and Annika stay on an island where Pipppi's dad is the cannibal king. The 3rd book, ' Pippi goes Aboard' tells how Pippi recreates a shipwreck for her and her friends to enjoy. I first read Pippi Longstocking as a 10 year old way back in 1969 - 70 and it was an instant attraction. Back then i was just learning to read a whole book and i liked the way each chapter held a mini adventure and made me laugh. Back then, i likened myself to PIppi who has a very creative mind and makes up stories, believing them to be show more true. Like her i believed that i could climb the highest tree, swing like a monkey, swim and play in ditches, sail a pirate ship ( a log in the river) etc. For those who do not know who Pippi Longstocking is, she is the strongest girl, who lives at Villekulla Cottage with her pet monkey, Mr Nelson, and a horse. Pippi is 10 years old, her father is lives on a Pacific Island where he is the king and her mother died when she was young. Pippi and her father (who was a pirate- a terror of the seas) became separated when they were shipwrecked, he landed on an island and she at Villekulla. Each chapter in each book is a mini short story and although the storylines are totally unrealistic they are guaranteed to make you laugh or remind you to remember what it was like when you were a child and to treasure the small things in life like splashing in puddles, having a picnic, pretending a stick is a wand to make magic. show less
Who hasn't wished that they had no parents and no rule and could make their own rules. This is like a one woman show of Lord of the Flies, but nobody gets hurt. OF course, it does begin to seem a bit lonely for Pippi once in a while.
This is a timeless children's classic story about a little girl Pippi Longstocking who wears her hair in signature red braids and has a knack for adventure. She lives by herself as her mother died when she was too little to remember and her father, a captain was washed overboard during a storm at sea. She believes he is king of a native tribe on some tropical island. She also has a pet monkey, Mr. Nilsson and a horse who lives on her porch. Although she lives by herself she does a wonderful job of taking care of herself, using unusual cooking techniques, mopping the floors by tying scrub brushes on to her feet, and single handedly dispatching burglars who come to steal the gold coins her father left her. Pippi is a fully developed show more character that readers immediately come to love and wish adore knowing her and her adventurous antics through the story. I think the humorous stories as well as Tommy, Anniika exhibiting emotions familiar to children such as overcoming fear in different parts such as when they mistook Pippi for a ghost make this a favorite story for many readers. show less
I don't own this edition, but I'm reviewing here instead of gushing the same spiel 3 times: all three of these are favorites I have read so many times I lost count. I devoured them again and again and again... From my fairly early child-hood up into adulthood, and then bought them again for my kids. I worship at the feet of Pippi Longstocking.
The power of Pippi is in just how well her stories stand the test of time, they're as wonderful and fresh as they were generations ago. I mostly knew her at first from the 80's live action film but I think now she has earned a spot next to Ramonia in my book.

Astrid Lindgren: November 7, 1907 - January 28, 2002 There are few children's authors more famous than Astrid Lindgren, creator of the feisty, legendary heroine, Pippi Longstocking. Lindgren was born on November 14, 1907, in Sweden. Her work has been acclaimed with many prestigious awards, among them the Hans Christian Andersen Medal (1958), the show more Lewis Carroll Shelf Award (1978), and the International Book Award (1993). This truly internationally known author was the recipient of the Albert Schweitzer Medal and has been honored repeatedly in her native Sweden. There is a bronze statue of her in a Stockholm park. Her picture is on a postage stamp. The "World of Astrid Lindgren" is a theme park featuring the wholesome characters of her books. The annual children's literature award is known as the Astrid Lindgren Prize. The inspiration for this long and illustrious career, spanning five decades, is the author's own childhood. Her memories - of free and often wild play with her brothers and sister, of loving parents, of a close-knit farm community, of reading about heroines like Pollyanna and Anne of Green Gables - became the foundations of her books. Lindgren has said, "I write to amuse the child within me, and I can only hope that in this way other children as well can have a little fun." Lindgren amused her own children by telling them stories. Her daughter, Karin, named Pippi Longstocking, and the first written story was given to Karin as a birthday gift. The next year, 1945, Pippi Longstocking won a best children's book competition and Lindgren began writing the perennially child-pleasing stories that make up her enormous body of work, some of which are the series based on "Children of Noisy Village", the fable "The Tomten", the rambunctious "Karlson-On-the-Roof", the irrepressible"Lotta on Troublemaker Street" , the controversial "The Brothers Lionheart", and the unforgettable, wildly funny superheroine, Pippi, was featured in other books and became a star of stage, screen and television. Lindgren has been called the world's most read author of children's books. She is hailed as the third most translated children's book author after H.C. Andersen and the Grimm brothers. Her impact on the world of children's literature is immeasurable. Astrid Lindgren died in her sleep, in her home in Sweden on January 28, 2002 at the age of 94. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
