Description

Tom Basden's adaptation of Dario Fo and Franca Rame's 1970 satire Accidental Death of an Anarchist was first performed at Sheffield Theatres in 2022, transferred to the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in 2023, then to the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London's West End, where it was first performed on 12 June 2023. The play is set in a Metropolitan Police station, where an irrepressible fraudster known only as the Maniac is brought in just as the officers are preparing for a judicial review of the show more recent 'accidental' death of a suspect in custody. Outwitting his captors, the Maniac dupes them into performing a farcical recreation of the incident, exposing the absurd corruption and terrifying idiocy at the heart of the system. The Sheffield Theatres production was directed by Daniel Raggett, with set and costume design by Anna Reid and lighting design by Jai Morjaria. It was performed by Daniel Rigby, Tony Gardner, Jordan Metcalfe, Howard Ward, Shane David-Joseph and Ruby Thomas. show less

An AMAZING tour de force that is excellent in every scene and almost every line. It was a pleasure to read and was funny, cynical, deep and absurd at the same time. Dario Fo creates like no other-- this play is highly inventive and original. I recommend it for anyone interested in drama.
As Fo's original version had some locally specific politics (Italy), this version is one that was adapted for the American stage & added some American politics instead (in this case, some Ronald Reagan-era jabs). It was an over-the-top, almost slapstick style farce that was a quick, enjoyable read. If done right, I think seeing a stage version might be a hoot. Makes me wish I were in NYC right now, heading to a small theater to see a performance of this, followed by a stop for some great food nearby.
Comic mayhem, with the protagonist’s point reasoned to pure genius. The hero of this play runs verbal circles around everyone in his path.
A Marx brothers type of political farce. The play revolves around the theme of misuse of power. In 1969 a bomb was planted in an Italian bank and a number of people were killed. In the aftermath of that the police rounded up a number of anarchists--one of whom Giovanni Pinelli died in their custody--being thrown out of a window. For what it is worth eventually the true culprits would turn out to be a ultra right wing group. In the meantime though the state would focus its attentions on others associated with Pinelli--going to a lot of lengths to frame them. This is more or less the background for Fo's play. Dario is a keen and savvy political commentator and one with a very high comic touch. Highly recommended.
Very funny and poignant.
