Rowan is a small town Scot who dreams of leaving it all behind and travelling the world. She goes to the city, first to Edinburgh, then on to London, where she moves into a flat with some interesting flatmates.
When her flatmate encroaches on her life and then leaves her holding the baby, literally, she heads back north to her family's home.
Life has and hasn't moved on in her hometown, but most important is Rowan's view of it, this is her chance to face some demons and the colourful residents. Rowan's return, however, does not just cause her to reassess her life, but makes those who stayed behind take a look at their own.
The characters are what make this book, the cinema owner who insists on playing classics, the Scottish-Italian family show more who runs the local chipshop and supplies most of the drama and, last but not least, Rowan's own parents.
A cozy read, makes me feel a wee bit homesick for Scotland. show less
