The story as most know starts out with a promise. Uther Pendragon promises Merlin the wise wizard anything, if only he can defeat his foes.
Nine months later the promise s fulfilled when Uther's first born is handed over to the wizard who then hides the child. In time Uther dies and his sword is placed in a stone- the inscription on the stone reads "Whosoever pulleth this sword" and lo and behold- a young man named Arthur pulls the sword from the stone- after years of the biggest burliest strong men were unable to do the same. So Arthur becomes king, and his adventures lead him to do great things. He joins with the Lady of the lake and disappears.
The book is a wonderful and delightful entry into the world of swords, dragon, high courts and kingdoms passed so many centuries ago. I enjoyed it, as it reminded me, I am never too old to remember what it felt like to wish for a king like Arthur, whence i was a child. I think its a good reminder that we need a man like Arthur on our side in the white house, today. (
