(2009) (SPORTS)
At age twelve Troy White is a middle school quarterback and football genius – he can predict offensive plays by watching the formations, and has been secretly hired by the Atlanta Falcons to do just that. A cunning newspaper reporter is out to ruin his little secret, as well as destroy his middle school football team’s chances at a state title.
Football Champ is a somewhat far-fetched tale, but one that is fun to read. Younger teens will understand Troy’s naïve desire for fairness, believing that the truth will clear the record. “But we’re not cheating. Why can’t we just tell Peele it’s me?... That there’s a pattern…” “No, I’m sorry, Troy. People will twist this around … Especially someone like show more Peele.” Even non-athlete readers should enjoy the sports writing, as well as the action and suspense that build to the very end of the book. show less
