This book is a very fun and interactive read for children. The main idea of this book is to prompt students to keep their ears open for different sounds in their daily lives. The things I liked about this book were the vibrant illustrations and the writing/ language. The illustrations were fun and interactive. They made it easy for the reader to relate. The writing included sound words and onomatopoeia which allowed students to really experience the book.
This books is simple, yet amazing! Paul Showers does an outstanding job of creating spellings for sounds that really sound like the real thing. Kids would love to try this out and use invented spellings for sounds. I absolutely love this book!
A young girl likes to go on walks with her father. They walk around the neighborhood together, but do not talk, only listen. She describes the sounds she hears on her walk, then challenges the reader to sit still in the quiet and notice the sounds around them.
The girl and her father took a silent walk with their dog. As she walked to the park silently she was able to hear a new world of noises. I enjoyed the idea of listening. Its a dying trait. I would use this book as a prep reader for listening excersizes in my preK classroom, I can also reinforce walking, clearing your mind, paying attention, visiting the park, etc... Its illustrated and word choice for the young reader. Grades preK-3
Put on your socks and shoes–and don't forget your ears! We're going on a listening walk. Shhhhh. Do not talk. Do not hurry. Get ready to fill your ears with a world of wonderful and surprising sounds.
This book shows students how to be aware of their surroundings. This little girl was walking her dog and hears all kinds of different noises in different locations. It shows students that there are different environments where these sounds occur.
Age Appropriateness: Primary
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Media: Ink and Wash
Plot: The plot of this story is important because it tells the reader how the girl becomes a better listener and how she is attentive to what is going on around her. The little girl goes on a walk with her dad and notices many of the descrete sounds around them.
Review: This is a good example of realistic fiction because although it did not really happen it could happen. The girl and a her dad go on a walk with their dog Major and pay special attention to all of the sounds that surround them.
