Davis Bitton was born in Blackfoot, Idaho, in 1930. After graduating from Brigham Young University, he earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Princeton University. He had faculty appointments at the University of Texas, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and since 1966, the University of Utah, where he was professor of Renaissance and show more Reformation history. In 1995 he retired and became an emeritus professor. Always interested in Mormon history, Bitton was among the charter members of the Mormon History Association and served as its president. Starting in 1972, he served as assistant church historian for 10 years.
