Now don’t get me wrong, I love Choose Your Own Adventure books. My many fond memories of them from childhood prompted me to pick up this book at a used sale. I didn’t find it as engaging as others of the series, possibly because of the prevalence of machinegun-armed assassins and a vague colonial feel (references to the “Orient” and the “natives”). However there are a wide variety of stories, featuring pyramids, cobras, ancient reborn pharaohs, aliens, telepathy, kidnappers, and much more.
The Choose Your Own Adventure series offered an option every few pages to choose how the story would continue. According to your preference, you would follow its instructions by turning to the appropriate page of the book as indicated by your choice. This was a popular and revolutionary idea when the series was first launched in the early 1980s, driving it to incredible sales levels for many years until it was overshadowed by variants on the idea that took the concept to more elaborate lengths (e.g. Fighting Fantasy) and especially by other interactive media.

The plot: it's like a mystery story that happens to take place in Egypt, where the mystery is generally made to be more important than the setting.

Observations: Richard Brightfield show more debuts as a new author in the CYOA stable, beginning with this entry. The Stargate series might owe some of its original inspiration to this book, or maybe it's just a really obvious idea.

Personal memories: Another early entry in the series that I was late in discovering. I felt like it missed the mark, although that's probably stemming from the fact that I loved Mystery of the Maya (#11) and wanted this to be a lot more like that one.
