Kiss an Angel

Forced to marry the devastatingly handsome yet cold and humorless Alex Markov, Daisy Devereaux does what she does best - gives it her all. Flighty, featherbrained Daisy is the last woman Alex thought he would be attracted to, but Daisy's incredible heart and passion for life soon have him questioning his long held belief that love is for fools. Do such stark opposites have a chance at a future together?
Susan Elizabeth Philips is rapidly becoming my favorite new author. Her characters and events come alive on the page despite the often ridiculous circumstances and scenarios.
Alex starts out as a complete alpha jerk who treats Daisy abominably with every intention of driving her away. But his cold hearted facade show more gradually melts as Daisy weaves her guileless web of charm and affection around him. Their chemistry is tangible and their romance both sweet and sexy.
The secondary characters are well-developed from the spiteful teenager with a crush on Alex to the manipulative circus owner bent on revenge.
The circus setting is quite original and scenes from The Greatest Show on Earth kept running through my mind while reading. The inclusion of animal characters, while adding another layer of charm, also raises question regarding the ethics of keeping wild animals in captivity for human entertainment.
In sum, Kiss an Angel is a fantastic opposites attract romance for fans who adore a good grovel from their heroes. show less

During the months following her mother's tragic death, Daisy Devreaux made poor decisions in her grief...most of them financial. Now she's facing jail time unless she accepts her father's deal. He will pay off her debts and keep her out of jail only if she grows up, gets a job, and marries the man he has selected for her. Desperate and having no one else to turn to, she accepts the deal and marries Alex Markoff, a man she hadn't laid eyes on until her wedding day.
I have to admit, I was skeptical when I started this book. The summary sounded so unrealistic that I didn't think I could suspend my belief. I'm so glad I listened to my GR's friends on this one! Thanks, Dee! The author planted little seeds along the way to bolster her plot, show more starting with Daisy's conscience. She took her wedding vows very seriously. She might not know Alex, or love Alex, but a vow before God is serious business to her and she's going to try to make her marriage work.
I liked Daisy. Even if she was naive and a little "ditzy" at times, she grew in confidence and ambition as the story went along. By the end of the book, I felt like I'd watched a bird spread her wings for the first time. Alex is a little more complicated. He started out as a big jerk. In fact, he stays a big jerk for a large portion of the story, but he won me over in the end. Only because there was a LOT of groveling. Which he earned in spades. It also helped that he came clean and revealed his secrets, then changed his ways.
What I liked best about this book was the setting. Who doesn't love a circus? Here we have a spoiled rich girl, married to a stranger, forced to live on a budget, performing manual labor for the circus, and maintaining a home...er...trailer. The comedy is abundant, although I did enjoy the serious scenes along the way. In fact, there were many standout scenes between Daisy and the circus animals. My favorites included Sinjun the tiger and Tater the baby elephant.
I could go on and on, but I won't spoil the story. Just get the book and read it...especially if you ever considered joining the circus. You'll love it! Personally, I plan to enjoy it many more times in the future. show less

Sooo I really loved this one. I mean it started out funny but then the female lead's character development was so strong, I went from giggling to ooohs and then ohs and yes some rage because boy do men suck in these stories and to that final heartache when you realize a woman has just given up. I mean you just know, and if you happen to be a female reader, that's something we will always share as women. Nevertheless, 10 points to this brilliant story, superior aich-o-tea scenes and our unflinching (hah) heroine.
Another fine romance from SEP. I loved the spunky heroine and the hero injured emotionally by his past. Even the almost magical moments with animals worked for me here which they many times don't when included in novels. I loved the way she loved him and the way she grew over the course of the book. I loved how he thought he was such a bad man incapable of love and how she taught him otherwise. There were light hearted moments and sweet love scenes and angst and sincere contrition from the hero. And the setting was super unusual. Gotta love a romance set in an aging circus. No wrong notes for me. Loved it.

Ooh, this book was a hard one for me to read, and not because it was a bad one but just because it makes you feel so many different things at the same time: you feel sad, angry, hot, swooney and then you just feel so freaking happy with everything that's going on with the characters. I always loved Ms. Phillips writing with her 'Chicago Stars' series, but now I almost worship her. Amazing writing, worldbuilding, plot and character development made this book one of the most emotional and special for me to read.
**4.5 Stars **
I really enjoyed this book, I did knock off half a star due to the amount of times the hero referred to the heroine as ditzy, featherbrained, airheaded etc (even if it was only in his mind) it got kind of tedious. I wasn't drawn to the circus plot on the back of the book, but by now I know that most of her cover summaries don't intrigue me but the actual story does. The characters were fun and liked to see them evolve.
