This whole series is basically retelling WWI and WWII stories in a different milieu. It's been a while since I read them, but this one is the Colditz story I'm pretty sure.

The fact that the author is a former soldier in special forces, according to his biography anyway, gives a lot of verisimilitude and some lovely stories of the change from "noble war" to professional soldiering.
With the war dragging on DragonMaster Hal Kalais is coming to wonder if the endless bloody stalemate will ever end. New ideas and new weapons seem to do nothing but spend more lives - both men and dragons dying in such quantities that neither side will win, no matter the outcome. Captured and imprisoned, Hal plots escape and continues to dream prophetic dreams....

Enjoyable, if not quite as upbeat (if a war can be said to be upbeat) as the first installment. Worthwhile if military fantasy featuring dragons and somewhat rough and ready heroes who don't always see their own worth.
