Once, Special Agent Smoky Barrett hunted serial killers for the FBI. She was one of the best--until a madman terrorized her family, killed her husband and daughter, and left her face scarred and her soul brutalized. Turning the tables on the killer, Smoky shot him dead--but her life was shattered forever. Now Smoky dreams about picking up her weapon again. She dreams about placing the cold steel between her lips and pulling the trigger one last time. Because for a woman who's lost everything, what is there left to lose? She's about to find out. In all her years at the Bureau, Smoky has never encountered anyone like him--a new and fascinating kind of monster, a twisted genius who defies profilers' attempts to understand him. And he's issued Smoky a direct challenge, coaxing her back from the brink with the only thing that could convince her to live. The killer videotaped his latest crime--an act of horror that left a child motherless--then sent a message addressed to Agent Smoky Barrett. The message is enough to shock Smoky back to work, back to her FBI team. And that child awakens something in Smoky she thought was gone forever. Suddenly the stakes are raised. The game has changed. For as this deranged monster embarks on an unspeakable spree of perversion and murder, Smoky is coming alive again-and she's about to face her greatest fears as a cop, a woman, a mother . . . and a merciless killer's next victim.… (more)

I really enjoyed this book. It's intricacies, details, mystery, guessing who is the guilty killer. Also liked the working relationships between the team. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series ( )

I've read a lot of pretty dark mysteries, and generally enjoy them. But this one was one of the darkest I've read, and was almost too much for me. I'm really not convinced that it needed to be quite so violent, but I stuck with it and it was an entertaining book.

The bad guy was so violent, hateful, and smart that it seemed almost hopeless. He seemed to know almost everything about the people he was after, which was a bit unbelievable, although in the end, it began to make some sense how he did it. At one point there seemed to be a large number of accomplishes who were somewhat like clones, which was pretty scary. I'm still not sure where they came from.

If you are a fan of this series, I'd be interested to know if the rest of the books in the series are as violent as this one before I read any more. I want to make sure I'm in the right mood.

If you don't mind a high level of violence, you may enjoy this book, but if you're adverse to it, you may not want to read it. ( )

Don’t you love it when you stumble across a new book and it turns out to be fantastic?

That's what happened to me! I was looking for a new mystery thriller series to start and I came across Shadow Man by Cody McFadyen! I ended staying up till 4:37 am to finish reading this book and I am already about a quarter of the way through the next book!

The Shadow Man is about Smoky Barrett, and she has lived through a nightmare. A Special Agent in the FBI, she hunts serial killers. Until one night, a monster attacks her and her family. She kills him, but not before her husband and daughter are killed. She is alone, broken, scared, and not wanting to live. When a new killer taunts Smoky and kills a friend of hers, leaving a child without a mother. Smokey finds herself again!

The character building was delightful! Even though it’s about Smoky, you get the chance to learn about the other characters as well. They all have their secrets, faults, and troubles. Cody McFadyen does not hold back with the blood and gory! He also does a wonderful job with allowing us to feel the emotions from the characters. This was a page turner for me! It's a gripping, dark, suspenseful and creative read! Happy reading everyone! ( )

Male writing 1st person female protagonist. Well written; horrific violence against women. Also loving passages about motherhood and love. Hard to reconcile. ( )

I hate when I figure out who the killer is really early on, but other than that this was a decent and gory entry in the "hunt for the serial killer" genre. ( )
