The US edition changes the spelling to "Theater" from the English "Theatre". This book was published when the new Globe was under construction. It tells a brief history of the theatre, with special focus on the development of theatre in the middle ages and up through Shakespeare's time. The featured illustration is of the Globe, rather disastrously on fire. It lasted for 15 years and burned down rather near the end of Shakespeare's career. Includes some nice illustrated maps, and cutaways of theatre interiors.

This is a good example of an informational book. It gave good accurate information in a way that was engaging. It allowed for the reader to get into the information and learn about the history of theater.
