In Transcend, famed futurist Ray Kurzweil and his coauthor Terry Grossman, MD, present a cutting edge, accessible program based on the vanguard in nutrition and science. They've distilled thousands of scientific studies to make the case that new developments in medicine and technology will allow us to radically extend our life expectancies and slow the aging process. Transcend gives you the practical tools you need to live long enough (and remain healthy long enough) to take full advantage of the biotech and nanotech advances that have already begun and will continue to occur at an accelerating pace during the years ahead. To help you remember the nine key components of the program, Ray and Terry have arranged them into a mnemonic- Talk with your doctor, Relaxation, Assessment, Nutrition, Supplements, Calorie reduction, Exercise, New technologies, Detoxification. This easy-to-follow program will help you transcend the boundaries of your genetic legacy and live long enough to live forever.… (more)

The book walks on the edge of a ridiculous proposition, that we might live forever. This is an odd mix of healthy advice, scientific and engineering prowess and potential snake oil pseudoscience solutions that have not been tested broadly enough and are not for everyone.

I love the text as seen from a distance, this is content that is so hard to categorise from self help, philosophy to politics even. Whether this text or the previous “fantastic voyage” are realistic and accurate enough to really help people live healthier and longer lives I am not sure. But we should welcome books that aim to envision transformation at this scale as long as they are clear about how robust their advice is. ( )

Even if you don't buy the forecast that "in less than 2 decades, we will be adding more than a year each year to life expectancy" (p xiii), implying that this century will see humans approach immortality, there is a lot you can ponder in this thick sequel to the authors' 2004 book _Fantastic Voyage_. TRANSCEND stands for Talk with your doctor, Relaxation, Assessment, Nutrition, Supplements, Calorie reduction and weight loss, Exercise, New technologies, Detoxification. On nutrition, I still don't see how non-starchy, above-ground vegetables could realistically become my bulk-intake, bottom-of-pyramid category; the authors despise such common staples as potatoes, bread, corn, pasta, and rice as being high-glycemic.

Definitely more concrete advice than in Ray Kurzweil's earlier book Fantastic Voyage. Most of it is really a common sense with anyone paying attention to his/her health nowadays, but it is a good resource for those who have been seeking for a good health-regimen to follow. Talk to your fitness and nutritional adviser(s) though, to set up a personally suitable plan following Ray's and Terry's principles. ( )
