I checked this book out of the library about a week ago. I checked out of this book about 50 pages after that. What was it that did me in? Hard to say. It was either Chloe's bizarre vacillation between "this guy is a dateable prospect" and "men are scum" or the painfully detailed descriptions of Chef Julien's salt-encrusted fish.

This was OK but... it was incredibly ironic listening to this audio book's narrator reading conversations between the main characters about respecting the Cajun culture when she didn't bother to learn the correct pronunciation of any of the characters's names or the towns or even New Orleans. ( )

Unusual story which bounces back and forth from 1700's to modern time. Involves a complicated murder case and mysterious buried treasure of golden statuettes. A bit overly complicated for my tastes; but well written with odd ball twists and turns. An interesting look at cajun culture. ( )

Deliciously mysterious and romantic. Another superb from Mindy Starns Clark. Read it. I highly recommend it. ( )

There are two storylines, one past and one present, the transitions between them are handled skillfully. The pacing of the murder mystery is quite good. The main character is Chloe Ledet, daughter of a famous New Orleans chef, who wakes in a hotel room with a dead guy and no idea what happened. She searches for truth with the help of a friend. The characters are well constructed and the suspense kept my attention.

I was enjoying this, until the final climax. I was ok with the characters displaying religious beliefs, but feel that it is a cop out for an author to use PRAYER as the solution to a crisis. Until the end it seemed like a decent episode of any mystery/cop show. ( )

Epigraph
Dedication
In loving memory of my father,
Robert M. Starns, M.D. 1929-2008
Louisiana born and bred, he passed along to me his joy in this land and its waterways. An avid reader, he taught me the value of a tale well told. To combine both for this story has been incredibly fulfilling.

And with love to my father-in-law,
John C. Clark Sr.
Though a Yankee through and through, your enthusiasm for New Orleans makes you an honorary Southerner. Thank you for your love and support through the years!
