Description

From Bhim, a drink-racked mahout, Shand learned to ride and care for her. From his friend Aditya Patankar he learned Indian ways. And with Tara, his new companion, he fell in love. Travels on My Elephant is the story of their epic journey across India, from packed highways to dusty back roads where communities have remained unchanged for millennia. It is also a memorable, touching account of Tara?s transformation from scrawny beggar elephant to star attraction. In this new edition Mark Shand show more explains how what began as an adventurous whim has developed, decades later, into a life of campaigning to provide vital migratory corridors for these magnificent creatures, whose habitat is under constant assault from man. show less

Fascinating account of the author's trek across India on an elephant. The story starts as he decides to do this slightly crazy feat, and then tells of the difficulty of purchasing an elephant. Tara, when he buys her, has not been well-treated, but with love and good food she soon becomes a beautiful animal. We learn just how many people are needed to look after and drive an elephant, meet some fascinating characters along the way, and discover a great deal about Indian culture. Written with some humour in a very readable style.

Travels on my Elephant.
Mark Shand.
I think my dad got us this for Christmas 2018. I found it a bit weird because I honestly think he fell in love with his elephant. I know people get attached to animals but this made me slightly uncomfortable...
Travels on My Elephant became a bestseller and won the Travel Writer of the Year Award at the British Book Awards in 1992.
6/10.

(show all)za, un mattone cederà, poi un altro.
