Showing the Flag

Description

The flag that is shown, literally and metaphorically, by these characters is always the Union Jack. Gardam's stories are acutely observed social commentaries on Englishness, its weaknesses and its illusions.

Another excellent collection of exquisite short stories from Jane Gardam. Although all very English, they vary from hauntingly simple ghost stories like 'Bang, Bang - Who's Dead', to more complex stories set in the English Home Counties 'The Dixie Girls' and 'After the Strawberry Tea', which are nostalgic but uplifting, and more cosmopolitan stories still rooted in England like 'Damage' .
