This is a terrific introduction to the American Civil War for all ages. Younger children will like the poetic verse, set to Stephen Foster's period song "Hard Times Come Again No More." Bauer has added a wealth of extra information in sidebars on each page for readers who want more in-depth material. Geister's paintings beautifully depict the epic sweep of history and the very human faces caught up in it. Geister's website, davidgeister.com, offers free downloads of Foster's song, with both the original words and with Bauer's verse.
