The author, a professor from Botswana, has a wonderful gift. All the voices seem authentic: the prissy diplomat, the naive younger brother, the middle aged man thrust into a different culture, the racist South African, and on and on. Many stories follow a theme of hubris and the downfall, and extol the virtues of not gossiping, giving children their freedom and not being too dictatorial as a parent, adjusting to the new race relations of today, and having stoicism. The story from which the book is titled is not the best. The reader is captivated, and the action goes outside Botswana at times into countries like South African and Ghana.
