I think that this play, more than most, will succeed or fail on the talent and depth of its cast. As a purely written document, it could have been a powerful indictment of the horrors war visits on those least able to defend themselves or an uplifting story of how the vulnerable can overcome shared adversity together, but ultimately falls short by opting for a conclusion that tries to have it both ways. Although "Ruined' is still a powerful read in many places, I definitely recommend seeing it performed if one has the chance.
Pulitzer prize winning play about civil war in the Congo and the women in a brothel. Powerful script.
Well written. Big issues. Exotic locale.
A heartbreaking and important concept that is difficult to translate to stage. I am interested to read more of Ms. Nottage's work or ser it performed. 3.5 stars.
