Lovely. The theme is universal, but the details make this special. The prose is graceful, and the illustrations vibrant and engaging. Don't save it just for Father's Day, or for Social Studies class.
This is a moving story about a fathers love for his son, and how far he would go for his "Tender Heart". The book begins with the child questioning his father with a bunch of "what if" scenarios to see what his father would respond. With each response, the father remains truthful and tender, reassuring this son of the depth of his love for him. This is a great story about fathers that will go far and wide for their children, and how they would even put their own lives in danger to protect their precious babies.
Papa, Do you love me? Is a story about a young child who questions his father on whether or not he loves him or not. Tenderheart, as the boy’s father calls him, questions his father on how much and how far his father loves him. He asks his father if he would love him even if he was a herd watcher and even if he fell asleep and hyenas killed a cow. He asks his father numerous scenarios on whether his father would still love him and always his father explains, that he will love him always because he is his father.
I think this book is a great way to let children know that even though they make mistakes and their parents might get angry with them that their parents still love them and do not love them any less. I really like this book show more because it explains a good concept in a way that kids will be able to understand and the scenarios given in the book seem far worse than anything a young child could do.
One classroom extension I would use from this would be for the students to write how they feel when their parents get angry with them. I would use the story to teach about the history of earlier cultures and the meanings of watching the herd and how important it was to the cultures. show less

Each time a boy asks his father if he loves him the father tells him how much, through vignettes and windows of what life with the Maasai is like.
Nice repetitive story about a boy asking his father about the depth of his love. Good for language learners, with glossary in back.
A father in Africa answers all his son's questions about everything and in turn the boy learns that his father's love is unconditional.
I like this book because of the different culture that it depicts and how it does that. I would use it in my teaching to show my students a different culture.
The age or grade I would use this for would be 3-6 year olds and preschool-kindergarten.

This is a great book to help children remember how much their parents really love them even if they do something wrong. This will help kids who think their mom or dad is mad at them but remind them their parent won't be mad forever. Ages 3-6 Pierce County Library.
