1076 Democracy and the Student Left, by George F. Kennan and Students and Teachers from [various colleges] (read 15 Sep 1970) I thought Kennan's rejoinder to his leftist critics was superb. I thought his handling the protests against on-campus recruiters simple and devastating, culminating in: "When the question is asked . . .as to how a student could possibly devote himself to scholarly inquiry when the Marines are recruiting across the street, I am tempted to suggest that the answer is not really that complicated: this might conceivably be done by the simple expedient of taking a book, going in to the library, and reading. I doubt that the recruiter would follow him there." I found Kennan on most points unanswerable, even though I thought some of the letters difficult to answer when I read them. ( )
