The eminent paleontologist recounts his Missouri childhood, the trials of becoming a full-fledged scientist, his many expeditions, and the unearthing of evidence that supports the theory of continental drift and sheds light on the age of dinosaurs. "From rural Missouri before World War I to the nuclear present, Edwin Colbert's life story is a saga of exploration and discovery. His search for the secrets revealed by fossils, particularly those of dinosaurs, crisscrossed North America and all the other continents. Along the way he courted and married Margaret Matthew (a talented paleontological artist), raised a family of five sons, taught such eminent scientists as Stephen Jay Gould (now of Harvard University) and John Ostrom (Yale University), wrote many books for the scholar and for the general reader, wrote and delivered hundreds of scientific papers, and today at age eighty-three continues his active personal and professional life."--Book Jacket.… (more)

At first, the bland, quaint, folksy prose got to me, but then as "Ned's" 60-year career unfolded, I began to feel like a dinosaur-nut kid all over again. A great book for anyone interested in American paleontology. ( )
