I quite enjoyed this. It's a refreshing fantasy-adventure tale in that our young, parent-less heroine isn't trying to save the world from the ultimate evil (aren't you getting a little sick of that worn-out plot?) but instead escaping an awful life and having her every wish fulfilled. Until, of course, she realizes that having your every wish fulfilled is never all it's cracked up to be. True, it's a little cheeseball with the moral, but, like I said, I enjoyed it, and I don't doubt that many kiddos will too.
Side note: I honestly thought for a long time that this was a book about a dog named Molly Moon because there's a dog on the cover, but the dog is actually a pug named Petula who (also refreshingly) is pretty much a normal-acting show more dog and not a talking one.
Additional side note: There's an ice cream shop in Seattle called Molly Moon's that has a dog in its logo. Coincidence? I don't know, but the ice cream there is bomb. show less

Molly’s is an average child’s fantasy. “Oh, how I wish I could get back at Mom for making me eat lima beans. She knows I hate them, that’s why she gives it to me!” The idea of being able to get revenge for being served vegetables they hate and being force-marched to bed at 9 o’clock makes Molly Moon a fun and silly read for the 8-12 crowd.
I also made the mistake of reading it by myself. It was actually a restart. Mags and I had started reading it last spring and had to set it aside when we were 1/3 the way through while she went to visit her dad. We never picked it back up, and I figured it’d be a quick book to help me hit my 75-book goal (this one makes number 68, only 7 to go ) I remember we’d laughed and laughed until show more tears came into our eyes and my throat was hoarse from doing the voices and cackling so much. Without her, however, I only chuckled a couple times and found myself wishing I was sharing it with her. Children lend their magic to some books, a magic we adults seem to have lost.

Molly Moon has spent her entire life in a miserable orphanage run by the hairy, snaggletoothed Miss Adderson. But when she finds a mysterious book, Molly discovers an extraordinary talent -- she can hypnotize anyone! Accompanied by Petula the pug, Molly hypnotizes her way to New York and Broadway stardom. But hot on her trail is the sinister professor, who is determined to use Molly to stage the crime of the century...
Molly lives in a horrible orphanage in England and dreams of greatness. When she finds a hypnotism book, she learns to hypnotize her way out of the orphanage and to New York City. While the reader did a good job on the voices, I found Molly as a character rather unappealing.
Orphan Molly Moon discovers a book called "Hypnotism" and begins an adventure in which she learns how to hypnotize people and things to get what she wants but in the end discovers that friendship and helping people are most gratifying. After leaving the orphanage in England to find her best friend Rocky, Molly becomes famous but trouble follows and the two devise a way out of blackmail from the crook Professor Nockman and eventually return to save the orphanage. Perhaps a good read-a-loud and motivator to read the rest of the series in the spirit of Harry Potter.
I really liked this book because you never knew what was going to happen next. There were lots of suprises, such as when one charachter hypnotizes the other charachter in to believing for a moment that he hypnotized her into imagining the first half of the book just to get her spirits up and make her realize that as bad as her situation is, it could be worse. He does this to make her realize that as bad as things are, they could be worse. I also liked the moral points the book brought up, such as the fact that, if hypnotism existed, although hypnotizing people would certainly be bad, what about hypnotizing them to cure a phobia or make them feel no pain during a surgery.
an orphan named Molly Moon lives in a terrible orphanage, but she finds a book on hypnotism and gets herself to New York. There is a mysterious man who wants the book and has anti-hypnotism goggles. If you like pugs, you will most likely love this book because it does involve a pug! I think that this book is AWESOME!:)
