There were times when we had to go without puddings to pay John's uniform bills and always I did the facings myself with a cloth-ball to save getting new ones. I would have polished his sword too if I had been allowed; I adored his sword. And once I remember we painted and varnished our own dog-cart and very smart it looked to save fifty rupees. Sara Jeannette Duncan, also known as Mrs. Everard Cotes, was born December 22, 1861 in Brantford, Ontario. She attended Central School and later Brantford Collegiate Institute. She also attended the Toronto Normal School. She was the first female journalist to be employed full-time by the Toronto Globe. There she wrote under the name of Garth show more Grafton. She was also one of the first women members of the Press Gallery in Ottawa. 'The Imperalist' (1904) was considered her best novel. On July 22, 1922, she died in Ashtead, Surrey, England.
