Miss O'Dell: My Hard Days and Long Nights with The Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and the Women They Loved

A woman who was everywhere and knew everyone, from 1968, when she hung around Apple Records till a job materialized, forward. Good detail on life as a tour manager, etc. (Eric Clapton comes off particularly badly, reminding me of Valerie Bertinelli's recent comment, "Once a dick, always a dick.")

O'Dell's memoir is only notable as an insider's view of famous rockers, details that have become widely known in the intervening decades. Her own life story, even with the prize job. is unremarkable. Unlike Cider with Roadies by Stuart Maconie that I finished a few days ago, there was no spark in O'Dell's writing, just a comparatively dull account after the initial joy of getting a job with Apple Records, a job that only came about after a lot of hanging around, hoping, and running errands. Hats off to her success when most teens would have given anything for the opportunity, although later drug abuse blurred the euphoria.

Just stumbled across this one at the library; I hadn't heard of it or her. Starting in 1968, she was an intimate with the Beatles, and managed on tours by The Rolling Stones, Dylan, CSNY, and many more. This is in a way a kiss and tell book, but she paints sympathetic and realistic portraits of those she dealt with. Silly and gossipy, it's still a fun read if you care at all about the people she's talking about.

Chris O'Dell wrote a mostly entertaining memoir about her life working with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and many other rock performers. She started as an office worker/errand girl at Apple Records working for the Beatles, which evolved into a personal assistant for various performers and eventually tour manager for major rock tours. Chris comes across as likable, enthusiastic, free-spirited but hard working in her younger days. Eventually, she becomes an alcoholic and drug addict and dabbles in affairs with married men but continues to do her job well. She has many gossipy anecdotes about the well-known people she was involved with. She finally settles down after having a child and leaves the rock world behind.

A fun insiders look at the 70s rock scene. Her take on the Beatles is particularly interesting, since she worked for them and knew them for quite a period of time, but does not appear to have an axe to grind with any of them. I think the best part of the book is how normal the author seems - it's difficult to relate to the glamourous Patti Boyd or super fabulous Bianca Jagger, but easy to see a piece of yourself in Chris O'Dell.

Actually this book was better than I expected.... (have I been saying this a bit lately).

I had no idea who Chris O'Dell was or that she was more than a groupie, but the title of the book intrigued me, so I pulled it from the shelf.

It turns out Chris O'Dell was in the right place at the right time..... A friend of hers invited her out one night to meet Derek Taylor who worked with the Beatles at Apple. Derek invited Chris to go back to London to Apple and once there she volunteered at Apple until she was offered a job.

She worked w/ Neil Aspinall, Peter Asher, George & Patti Harrison, Eric Clapton and many other well placed recording industry people. She was once the short-term girlfriend of Leon Russel....

Some of her stories are show more pathetic, how drugs & alcohol made some of the musicians just freaking nuts, how the addictions almost destroyed her.....

Not too much name dropping going on (which I was worried there would be), just the relationships she had with these people.

I have to hand it to her, she stuck to it and made a pretty good life for herself. show less

Je kan maar op het goede moment op de goede plek zijn. Chris O’Dell was dat en die schrijft daar vervolgens een onderhoudend boek over met de omslachtige titel Miss O’Dell. Hard Days and Long Nights with The Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan, and Eric Clapton. Dat is een mondvol en brengt u weinig verder maar ik ga het toelichten.

Chris O’Dell is druk bezig in Los Angeles een regulier leven te leiden als ze door een vriend wordt uitgenodigd voor een etentje. Daar is ook Derek Taylor aanwezig, die toevallig de publiciteitschef is van het net opgerichte Apple, de platenmaatschappij van The Beatles. Dat klikt prima tussen die twee en Chris wordt uitgenodigd om naar Londen te komen; er zal vast wel een baantje voor haar zijn bij Apple.

Ze show more trekt de stoute schoenen aan en meldt zich bij Apple. Daar maakt zij zich zo nuttig mogelijk tot ze een vaste waarde wordt en zowaar The Beatles ontmoet, die natuurlijk met enige regelmaat komen binnenwaaien.

Na enige tijd weet ze zelfs een opname bij te wonen en laat dat net Hey Jude zijn. Daar is een koortje voor nodig en Paul McCartney kijkt eens om zich heen;

“Come on, Chris, you can help,” he said. “We need as many voices as we can get.”
Sing on a Beatles track? The thought sent a little thrill of fear through me…But I was caught. Paul had asked me to join in and he was the boss.
I stood at the microphones with The Beatles and perhaps thirty members of the orchestra, clapping my hands and singing along with the refrain.

Dan gaat het hard. Door een toeval belandt ze als een van de weinigen op het dak van het Apple-gebouw als The Beatles daar hun beroemde optreden geven. Ze is goed in regelen en als Bob Dylan optreedt op het eiland Wight wordt ze met een helikopter ingevlogen omdat Bob hier en nu mondharmonica’s nodig heeft.

Dan komt Leon Russel naar Londen om op te nemen. Ook hij komt binnen bij Apple en is weg van Chris. Ze houdt de boel een beetje af want heeft haar werk in Londen en hoeft niet met Russell terug naar Amerika. Maar dan schrijft hij een nummer speciaal voor haar, Pisces Apple Lady. Ze valt voor hem en vertrekt met hem naar Los Angeles.

Maar Russell is wie hij is en gaat vreemd en ze gaat terug naar Londen, een illusie armer. George Harrison vraagt of ze zijn assistent kan worden en ze gaat met hem en zijn vrouw Pattie wonen in zijn huis. Gaat u zelf vooral lezen wat ze daar allemaal meemaakt, maar op een gegeven moment zit ze weer in Londen, bij Apple en heeft ze een relatie met Jim Gordon. Dat is een drummer met gebruiksaanwijzing, zoals u hier kunt lezen en Chris ontsnapt maar net aan zijn waanzin.

Ze regelt zaken voor de tournee van Eric Clapton en wordt dan voor The Rolling Stones gevraagd. Die gaan opnemen en wonen in Amerika en hebben assistentie nodig. Hun manager licht even de werkzaamheden toe;

You’ll need to find nice houses for them, take care of their daily business, book the recording sessions, attend to their personal needs, and there’s the album to worry about: getting the cover designed, lining up photographers, the whole fucking thing. Charlie and Bill will be in town now and then, too, and they’ll need hotel rooms, limos, cash, dry cleaning, that kind of stuff…Can you handle all that?

En dat kan ze. Zo belandt ze ook met haar foto als ‘mystery woman’ op de cover van het Stones-album Exile On Main Street en mag ze mee op tournee. Lees vooral het verhaal waarin ze voor Keith Richards een partijtje drugs in een andere stad moet ophalen. Riskant, maar ze doet het.

Als de tournee voorbij raakt ze in een dal. Ze heeft altijd meegedronken met de artiesten, gebruikt inmiddels cocaïne en zinkt soms aardig diep. Ze spaart zichzelf ook niet in dit boek.

Ze is inmiddels bevriend met Pattie, de vrouw van George Harrison (die trouwens het nummer Miss O’Dell over haar schrijft), maar die gaat een relatie aan met Eric Clapton. Chris flirt zelf met Ringo Starr en dat zorgt voor complicaties met Maureen, de vrouw van Ringo. Het is gossip natuurlijk, maar op het hoogste niveau en toch boeiend om te lezen.

Maar, Chris O’Dell is goed in wat ze doet en ze wordt gevraagd voor een tournee met Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Dat zijn een stel verwende kinderen (behalve Neil Young, die houdt zich overal buiten) met David Crosby voorop;

David was the baby. When he was upset about something, which was often several times a day, he’d rant and rave, grow red in the face, puff and pout, blow and wheeze, but as soon as he got what he wanted, he’d settle down, happy as could be.

De tournee met Bob Dylan is ook interessant. Daar gaat een jongen mee waar ze een oogje op heeft, maar dan blijkt ze ineens de concurrent van Joni Mitchell. Beiden vangen bot, Joni Mitchell is Joni Mitchell en schrijft er een nummer over en zo is Chris O’Dell ineens ‘the woman down the hall’ in het nummer Coyote van Mitchell.

Het is een wonderlijk leven. O’Dell heeft vanwege haar kwaliteiten werk genoeg. Ze werkt samen met John Denver, Linda Ronstadt, Jeniffer Warnes, Phil Collins, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, Electric Light Orchestra, Frank Zappa en Santana. Toch kent ze ook dieptepunten, met name als haar verslavingen de overhand dreigen te nemen.

Uiteindelijk trouwt ze met een Engelse aristocraat en krijgt een zoon, William. Tot op de dag van vandaag is ze goed bevriend met Pattie Boyd, de ex van inmiddels George Harrison en Eric Clapton en chat ze er af en toe mee op haar eigen YouTube-kanaal.
