When reading this book 10 or 15 years ago the author conveyed to me that John F Kennedy was the right leader at the time. Reading it I am less impressed. The author presents a sort of hagiography, plenty of nice things to say about him (and his wife and family) and very little of the other facts, other than that he got grumpy and implying that he lied a bit to cover up bad language.
Missing is the underhand ways in which he came to power (i.e. Daley and Chicago), his links to unsavoury people and his extra-martial affairs (to put it politely - Trump's got nothing on JFK).
However, it's a very good essay of the presidency of John Kennedy. The book was completed prior to the assassination in Dallas, but this was included with little comment show more in the last few pages. It stood too close to the events of the previous three years to grasp to importance and weight of what the world was going through at the time. It's also unable to reflect on the missteps that were probably in relation to Vietnam - it was JFK that pulled USA and many other countries into the war. show less
