Written in 1983, this is a fun mystery featuring activities at an academic conference. The murder has a motive that is rarely used in crime fiction. Charlie Salter’s squash lessons helped to solve the murder. I enjoyed the investigation free of modern technology and the badinage between the English-speaking Salter and Francophone o'Brian.
Inspector Charlie Salter of the Toronto Police has been sidlined in his job because he backed the wrong candidate for police chief. He is handed a file on a Toronto professor who was murdered in Montreal and all he is expected to do is a courtesy liaison with the Montreal police. He very much enjoys the challenges that get him out of the office and back into 'real' policing as a homicide detective.
