Excellent non-mathematical introduction to solid-state written for the 'intelligent layman' (today it should be 'layperson', but this was written in 1965). Crystals, quantum mechanics, energy bands, metals vs semiconductors etc. - all you ever wanted to know about these things and why they are the way they are. Nice illustrations too.
