I really wanted to like this book. And basically I did like the story line. However this is a graphic novel and the illustrations play a very large part of this story. The amount of gratuitous nudity, and the misogyny was disgusting. I had book 2 but I could not bring myself to read it because I was so disappointed in book 1. Most of the nudity was not needed. The one character grabbing the female characters breasts and complaining that they are not equal size (on two different sisters, not on one body) was horrid and uncalled for. This book was like a teenaged wet dream. This series has twenty-something books, and I hope for readers' sake, the misogyny stopped at book 1.
It is Maka’s goal to transform Soul Eater, a living scythe, into the ultimate weapon of death himself through the use of a powerful death scythe. To collect and consume 99 souls and one witch soul tainted by the underworld.
Maka and her fellow meisters must master their weapons as they battle the bizarre and deadly minions of the underworld. It is likely that the meisters’ own personal quirks will prove to be more of an obstacle than any sultry enchantress!
The Soul Eater series is one of those things I try to remain neutral about. I found the first volume to be so boring. The series idea was interesting, and the art was cute - I really like the cover. My problem is that there is way too much silliness and soft-core porn after show more that.
Manga contains over-sexualized female characters, and most of them are underage. Among the main characters is a 13-year-old girl. This really bothers me and makes it difficult to enjoy the series. I think the story could have been better if the characters had been more mature and the plot had been more serious.
In terms of plot, it’s scattered. The transition between storylines felt abrupt and didn’t seem to flow naturally. It was difficult to keep track of all the characters, and the story lacked a strong narrative arc.
This story could have been more enjoyable without excessive fan service. This story could have been engaging and thrilling if better written, but it is fragmented.
It would have been more enjoyable if the characters had been three-dimensional and the plot had had more depth. Instead, the characters come across as caricatures and the story is predictable and shallow. show less

I decided to read this because my friends all watch the anime and I saw an episode and it looked interesting enough but really the manga isn't that interesting. The story's fine, although I suppose that's what intrigued me in the first place. What I didn't like was the characters. They seemed to all be anime cliches, thrown together into a pretty interesting story. I can't even tell Soul Eater and Black Star apart. I suppose the only characters I liked were Maka and Death the kid. I think what really turned me away from this was the "fanservice;" that is, butts. I believe this is the reason I stopped reading manga four years ago; I was sick of this sexual pandering to who I am guessing is an audience of teenage males. So yeah, that took show more away a lot of depth that the story had the potential to vehicle. I must say I was a tad disappointed but nevertheless I'll try watching some of the television show in case it's any better. show less
Very fanservice-y but cool, fast, hard-hitting action.
wow why so many titties they are kids wtf , storyline was good but wtf so many titties
This is a story about teenagers who happen to be grim reapers and the weapons of grim reapers. That's right, half of the main characters actually turn into physical weapons so that they can reap souls. It's actually quite a funny manga series.
When fan service goes up, decent story and caring goes waaAAay down. Glad it's over.
