I hate to say it, as I've loved Appelt's children's novels, but generally her picture-books just aren't special. I appreciate that this counts up to 10 and also back down, that it gives us a chance to sum '10 9 ... = 55,' and that it encourages us to think of bats as appealing. But it's overly long, with a rhythm that takes a few reads to master, and has cartoony illustrations that do not appeal, imo.
An adorable fun counting book that encourages positive views of bats. There are a few places where the rhyming is forced and could be better.....but, overall we enjoyed it.

This was a great book of the bats from Appelt. The book teaches counting with colorful pictures and friendly counting. I would use this book when trying to get my children excited about counting.
Excellent, colorful book that emphasis the friendliness of bats while also teaching counting through repetition in story and rhyme. The fun and funny illustrations make it a must for bat lovers of all ages.
This is a great counting book. Students laugh out loud at the illustrations and the small things the bats did. This book could be used in a math lesson because it involves counting. 55 bats put on a spectacular show for the rest of the animals. All of the bats do different tricks and they are all just amazing. Finally, the last bat comes out and sits on the top of the giant pyramid the other bats have built. Kids laugh at this and love this book.
One of my favorite counting books. Maybe I'm a bit biased because I like bats, but the children dig this book. It's a very popular read and great for practicing counting.
This is a fun counting book. Each year fifty-five bats make up the Bat Jamboree and all of the animals come to watch. The first bat sings, the second flats, the third one cha-cha-chas and it goes on until it reaches 55: the pyramid. It's finally over when the bat lady sings.

This would be a fun book to read about Halloween. I think that kids would really enjoy the story, while learning about numbers also.

After reading this story to a classroom, I would have students make their own bats and then they could act out the book with them.
