I started reading yesterday and couldn't put it down. Ms. Burrell has woven a wholly credible tale of deceit, drama and courage. Sabre, a dedicated young attorney, always wants what's best for her clients. When a particularly baffling case lands on her desk, it will take all of Sabre's wits to get to the bottom of things.
The Advocate is definitely a page-turner. The characters come to life with rich description and believable dialogue. It is well paced and the story flows easily. If you're a Fan of courtroom drama and crime fiction, give this book a go

Sabre Brown is an attorney. Her clients are juveniles, and she represents them in the Juvenile Division of the San Diego Superior Court. Sabre's diligence in her cases is vital for the safety of the minors. Current representation is on behalf of Alexis Murdock, age 10, and Jamie Smith, age 2. As of the night police were called to the home by a neighbor; the children are under foster care at Jordan Receiving Home. What will she recommend to the judge?
Twists came as further investigative steps were taken after conversations with parents, law enforcement, and the social worker unraveled family history, parent/child dynamics, and different aspects of the night that led to the children’s placement in care.
I love reading legal novels. I show more liked the characterization of Sabre Brown, except for her acceptance/tolerance of nicknames given to her by colleague Bob Clark.
Whether in the Education field or Family Law, the mantra is "What is in the best interest of the child?" It came as no surprise to learn Teresa Burrell has been an elementary school teacher and an attorney working in the juvenile court system, as dialogues in the novel reflect the realism of her experiences.
I look forward to reading more of this series. show less

This is a very busy thriller with loads going on and a lot of different storylines occuring, some of which are intertwined, some not. I felt it had too many different threads, plot devices and twists for one book and got a little muddled.
The main character, Sabre, seems to be more than perfect at everything except being alert to danger. Several of the characters are not fully rounded out and the Dr. Steel character being a doppelganger of Sabre's brother was just too unbelievable.
There were a lot of good points, some thrills and clever plots but overall it felt too crowded, and with many relationships & backgrounds etc not explained or detailed at all.
The narrator does a good job but I can't get used to the way she pronounces Sabre as show more "Say Brur" instead of "Say Buh". Maybe it's a regional thing but the "r" has never been pronounced anywhere I've been or in anything I've watched or listened to. It's not helped by sometimes appearing that she does say it correctly and other times not. Having listened to samples of the later books in the series both Laurel Shroeder & John Bell pronounce it correctly as "Say Buh".
I received a free copy of this audiobook either from the author or a promotion or giveaway and am voluntarily writing an honest and unbiased review. show less

The Advocate by Teresa Burrell will keep you on your toes. It is part thriller, part mystery and part courtroom drama. Ms. Burrell's characters are believable and easy to get attached to. I smiled and laughed with them and felt anguish with them. The story, itself, is a page turner. In fact, I spent several evenings promising myself I would read just one more chapter, and actually reading two or three more. Anyone who is a fan of suspense or mystery will thoroughly enjoy The Advocate.
The Advocate
The Advocate series #1
by Teresa Burrell
This isn't my normal kind of read. I love PNR with HEA's.
That being said, I can only rave about this legal suspense by Teresa Burrell.
This story is a heartwarming and heart breaking. It shows the good in people as well as the bad. It gives you an idea of some of the struggles people go through and why they make some of the decisions they do and how those decisions, whether good or bad, have a chain reaction with so many people around them.
I was left sitting on the edge of my seat many times and every now and then I was left crying. Not all stories are meant to have a HEA and even though I was always hoping for one here, the ending was very satisfying.
I am looking forward to reading book show more 2 'The Advocate's Betrayel'.
Well done, Teresa Burrell. You have hooked me on a new genre. show less

I really enjoyed this book. Yes, there were lots of things going on but it was all tied in together and I felt like it worked. I loved Sabre, the main character, and her dedication to her job. I also loved her relationship with her co-worker, Bob. They are platonic buddies and I really liked that. I was also enchanted with Alexis who is the ultimate Southern Belle at 10 yrs. old. LOL!! Gotta love the South! Looking forward to reading more about Sabre and hoping to see some of the other characters too and maybe meet Mr. Spinola?
Up until I read this book, I had never read a mystery/suspense novel before. I met Ms. Burrell at a Barnes and Noble and decided to buy her book and read it. I'm extremely happy I did.
The Advocate is the debut novel by Teresa Burrell, a former attorney and child advocate.
Surprisingly, for a mystery/suspense story, The Advocate is a little touching and emotional. You have heroes rising to the occasion and a couple of brave souls connecting the dots and making the ending possible.
Sabre Brown is a Juvenile Court Attorney for San Diego County, in San Diego, California. For Sabre, her day started out as any normal day would. Sabre and her friend and colleague, Bob Clark, are supposed to have an easy domestic violence case. Appearances are show more not always as they seem. What looks like a straight forward case turns into something so much more. The parties involved in the case include: Gaylord Murdock, a southern gentlemen from Atlanta, Georgia; Gaylord's pregnant girlfriend, Peggy Smith, Gaylord's ten-year-old daughter, Alexis; and Peggy's two-year-old son Jamie.
Gaylord Murdock was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, to a well respected, prominent family. He fell in love with and married Elizabeth Sterling. At some point during their marriage, the couple moved from Atlanta to Dallas. After a year and a half of living in Dallas, the couple moved back to Atlanta but still maintained contact with their Texas friends. One of those Texas friends happened to be Sabre's older brother Ron.
Five years ago, Elizabeth Murdock disappeared from her home in Atlanta. Around the same time, Ron disappeared from an airport in Dallas. His car was found but there was no trace of him. For Sabre, not knowing what happened to him stops her from having any closure. Strange events start occurring, making Sabre think about and long for her brother even more. Is it possible one day when Sabre least expects it, Ron will walk back into her life?
A simple interview with her ten-year-old client regarding the facts of the case produces more questions than answers. Seeking help, Sabre turns to Detective Joe Carriage of the Atlanta Police Department, who has an agenda of his own. One simple phone call and a few more seemingly mundane questions exposes illegal activity, deceit, revenge, and murder.
The Advocate is a page turner which will grab you from the beginning. Through the characters, you will experience shock, the courage and bravery of a small child, compassion, the will to survive, and a determination to find truth and justice.
I found The Advocate to be the perfect book me for to put my amateur sleuth hat on for. In fact, after I read this book, I immediately bought the second book in the series.
This book was purchased by me.

- My deepest gratitude to my friends, Ron and Kim, for their strength, love, and encouragement;
To Marilee, my dear friend, for keeping me on track and for her never-ending words of wisdom;
To my friend, Bob, for ... (show all)his unconventional humor that kept me sane while I practiced law at juvenile court;
To my friend, Patti Ann, for her passion and high expectations;
To my “de facto son,” Bobby, for his love and for always making me proud;
To my nieces and nephews for their devotion and admiration that continually drives me to set an example by meeting my goals;
To my brothers, Don, Gene, Byron, and Philip, for helping me learn life’s hard lessons;
And especially to my sisters, Sissy, Marjo, Madeline, and Lana, for always having my back, and for loving me, believing in me, and supporting me no matter what I do, because in a world of utter chaos, the power of their love, the depth of their loyalty, and the extent of their confidence provides the path for me to reach my dreams. - First words
