A great tale for little ones who may have a little trouble settling down and staying focused. Great insight to how a student who may seem a little hyper can also be a really sweet kid (or rabbit) as well.
Howard is having a little trouble listening at school. As a result he finds that not listening can bring about lots of problems. First, during story time Howard is jumping and bouncing and not sitting and listening. His teacher yells at him. She wants him to sit, be quiet and listen. Howard ends up in the corner facing the wall all alone. At lunch time Howard's friends try to warn him about a slippery banana peel, but he doesn't listen. His food tray is up in the air and so is Howard. On the playground Howard doesn't listen and he gets hit in the eye with a ball. By the end of the day Howard is in the corner all alone, once again. But that is a good thing. Howard has a chance to think about his day. Will Howard learn to listen? You will show more have to read the story to see.

Binkow has done an excellent job of showing kids what can happen if they choose not to listen. Bad things can happen. The back of the book has tips and lots of questions for parents and teachers to have a discussion with kids about how to listen. Soft colorful pictures bring to life all of the troubles Howard gets himself into. Kids will love reading the simple sentences and will have fun identifying with all of the characters.

This is a great book for teaching kids why it is important to listen. And that even if they are not listening, it doesn't mean that they are bad, but that they should just work on their listening skills.
As a school library teacher I really love this book. I read it to my PK through 2nd grade classes. It is a great book to help teach students about paying attention and doing what is appropriate. I plan to buy this for my new library and I see there are other HBW books available! I can't wait!
"Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen" is a cute book to read to kindergarten or first grade children. The end of the book also includes a list of general rules that could be photocopied and posted in the classroom.
This book is a good example of fantasy because it takes place in a school and the world around it in the life of a child which are realistic, but the child is a rabbit making it unrealistic.
Media Used: Acrylic
Age Appropriateness: Primary and Intermediate
This book is a great teaching tool. There are rules listed at the back of the book that can be used in the classroom and discussion questions the teacher can use to get students talking about the book. Sticky notes can be used to remind teacher of questions to ask the class when reading.
