The "fly talk" featured in this book is quite hysterical to read aloud. The dream sequence when Fly Girl and Fly Guy imagine falling in love, marrying, and raising their brood in a cast-off tin can only to realise they'd miss their human friends too much to follow through with it--ending in "let's just be friends!--is completely charming (and a bit subversive.) This series is a hit with my kids (7 and 8) and this is my favorite of the bunch.
In Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl! by Tedd Arnold, there is the frequent theme of friendship and accepting others. It is shown through the interactions between Fly Guy and Buzz meeting Fly Girl for the first time. Buzz is worried his friendship with Fly Guy is at jeopardy, on the other hand, Fly Guy is excited to become new friends with Fly Girl. This story utilizes humor and a simple dialogue to highlight how change and jealousy are integral parts of growing up and relationships. Arnold's use of illustration is crucial in developing the aforementioned theme. The artwork is engaging thanks to it being very bright. Personally, I find myself relating to Buzz as I sometimes find myself feeling uncertain when my friends meet new friends.
“A boy had a pet fly. He named him Fly Guy.” And so this episode of Fly Guy begins. The boy, Buzz (a name Fly Guy can say), take a walk and meet a girl and her pet fly, Fly Girl. The flies take turns showing off for each other and realize they are made for each other! Luckily, the boy and girl become friends so they all know they will see each other again. Funny illustrations, perfect transition for beginning readers.
For the right audience, genius. For me, well, let's just say I have to make an effort to appreciate these. I do like the great big lesson about relationships, captured in a microcosm, here.
Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl by Tedd Arnold is an early chapter book that is sure to entertain young readers. With a simple story and is extremely easy to follow due to the large fonts that stand out. The illustrations stand out as something young readers would enjoy, and I would happily have this book in a first-grade classroom.
This is another great Fly guy book with great fun illustrations to keep the reader engaged. This one made me giggle a little and it's definitely a cute book to read aloud or to challenge students to read alone if capable. This book is about Fly guy and he meets Fly girl. They then have this immediate spark and are like boyfriend-girlfriend.
This book is great for age groups around fourth and fifth grade. This story was very lighthearted and of course was one of the classic flyguy books. This one in particular was interesting because it included flygirl so having both genders could appeal to a larger group and was a book that every child could enjoy. This book is a picture book but a little more mature of a picture book. In a classroom this book could be used around valentines day or just as a fun read aloud.
