With Bruce Wayne gone in the wake of BATMAN: R.I.P., Dick Grayson - formerly known as Robin and Nightwing - becomes the new Batman. And it's not long before the city's criminals put him to the test! With The Penguin intent on becoming Gotham's new crime kingpin and Two-Face waging a war of his own, how can any hero, let alone one who's just stepped into his role, stop them - especially since he also has to round up a posse of escaped criminals who've broken out of Arkham Asylum! Written by Judd Winick (BATMAN: UNDER THE RED HOOD) and illustrated by the legendary Mark Bagley (Ultimate Spider-Man), BATMAN: LONG SHADOWS collects BATMAN #687-691.… (more)

Dick Grayson as Batman: Meh. Two Face as Batman (even though it's a hallucination): Awesome. Verdict: It's an okay book. ( )

The story is part of the Dick Grayson takes over for Batman (again, though this time Batman doesn't just have a broken back but is literally dead) story. It's not a new or inspired plot, but the writing is pretty good. I especially like that a lot of the usual players are in the issues, like Two-Face, Scarecrow, Alfred. Unfortunately, Damian, Bruce Wayne's biological son is also in it as Robin, and in this TPB I really, really don't like his character.

The art is mostly okay. Sometimes I feel like when pencillers and inkers are working on a Batman title they go a little crazy on the shadows and these issues are definitely dark in many places.

Still, overall it was a pleasing read. ( )

This about as well as can be done with the abortion of a storyline where Batman is dead and his son is Robin. But I can't let DC off the hook and rate this higher. ( )

An excellent take on a difficult story arc for The Batman. With Bruce Wayne gone, Dick Grayson takes up the cowl, giving a different take to the Batman character and his relationships. His development with Alfred is excellent. The art is of a very high quality and I finished this thinking "OH NO! You can't leave it there!" Surely a marker of a great book & great story. Highly recommended. ( )
