I really like this book because the plot is exaggerated and shows the way a child would really think about things they may be nervous about or new to. The students in the story make up crazy stories about what will happen to them if they misbehave in the library. I also really like the illustrations in the story because they are detailed and help to tell the story. There are lots of details in each picture and there are also speech bubbles with sound effects that enhance the story. The main idea of this story is not to judge something before you actually experience it, because it may be very different than you make it out to be.
One of the "Black Lagoon" series, I got this book as a gift when I started library school. The bulk of the story humorously describes the frightening rumors and myths a child has heard about the school library and librarian. The illustrations are very funny, colorful, and fun. The story ends when the children actually visit the library, and see that it is a great (and not scary) place. My only point of disagreement is that the book spends about 25 pages depicting the library as a dungeon full of monsters, and only about 5 showing it as a fun and friendly environment. I'd like to see it portrayed a little more evenly! Overall, kids will enjoy this book for its comical illustrations. Librarians will enjoy it for the Dewey Decimal and show more "overdue" jokes! show less
I thought that The Librarian from the Black Lagoon by Mike Thaler was a very fun and funny book. This book is very creative and silly. The pictures in the book are all very detailed and creative. A student would not need the words to understand what is happening in the story. On the other hand, if the story was to be read aloud and the pictures were not shown. The children would be able to creative there own thoughts about what the librarian looks like and acts like. "Mrs. Beamster is the librarian. The kids call her "THE LAMINATOR."" I enjoy that at the end of the book the author shows that the story of the librarian from the black lagoon was just a story and that the real school library is fun and a safe place for learning.
Kids of all ages will love this book. Kids are sure that going to the library on a class trip is going to result in them being eaten or tortured by the evil librarian from the Black Lagoon. Wonderful, funny story.
Humorous take on kid's assumptions about things they don't know. In this case the first class trip to the library. Beware the laminator!
Funny, as always. I read this to first grade classes when I was an elementary school librarian and, frighteningly enough, they seemed to relate to the ideas.
Everyone is deathly afraid of the school librarian - she's so evil, no one wants to go to the library. Creepy, mean, and ugly as sin, Mrs. Beamster is a character we're not likely to forget.
