George Gately Gallagher was born in Queens Village, New York on December 21, 1928. He graduated from Pratt Institute and then worked as a commercial artist at an advertising agency for 11 years. He worked as a freelancer creating gag cartoons and comic strips. In 1973, he created Heathcliff, a comic strip about a fat cat with attitude.
