A book to get lost in, peeking through all the details of the images and wondering at the wisdom. A library that comes to life, the mystery of a missing book and the secret of everlasting life... For children and adults alike.
Wow, I love the illustrations in How to Live Forever--very detailed, colorful, and delightfully descriptive of the story. The magic of the illustrations reminds me a bit of David Wiesner's style. Interesting story, too, about a little boy who searches for the hidden treasure of a book promising immortality, only to find out it's not all it's cracked up to be (the book AND living forever!).
This kids picture book is terrific, with outstanding extremely detailed artwork and a fantasy story of a boy searching a living library for a book that promises immortality.
In the library of all the books that have ever been written, one book was lost. When Peter, who himself lives inside a book, finds its catalog card, he determines to find the book: How to Live Forever, or, Immortality for Beginners. Every night for the next two years, when night comes and the books come alive, Peter and his cat Brian search for the book, through all the rooms of all the books. When they come across four ancient Chinese men who give him the book who take him to meet the Ancient Child -- the only one who's read the book and not lost his mind. The Ancient Child convinces Peter that to live forever is not to live at all.
Absolutely beautiful illustrations of bookshelves in a library come alive.

beautifully illustrated, with bits of wit, humor and inspiration between the illustrated shelves.
Could only find online at openlibrary to borrow. Story doesn't work for me, but young me would absolutely have adored the pictures. Current me is too jaded to want to somehow spend more time examining them.
My 14 yo son and I both love all the visual puns & other details in the illustrations. Thompson is a bit like Jan Brett only not as pretty & nice. [a:Jan Brett|16325|Jan Brett|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-F-50x66.jpg]
