Description

Julia is in limbo. Her mother has just died and her married lover, Nicholas, has gone missing in Morocco. Thirsting for love, for sex, for connection, she grasps at the trailing threads of those who have left her behind: a birth certificate, issued two years before she was born and kept secret from her; and memories of Nicholas, his touch, his scent, his every action consuming her waking moments and filling her lonely nights. Her need to fill the void is so great that when Deepa, Nicholas's show more wife, walks through her door, they begin a passionate affair, carried along by desire and desperation. This ” along with the mysterious birth certificate ” leads Julia to question where she fits in other peoples " lives, and where she has fallen through the cracks. show less

Because I Have Loved and Hidden It is gloriously lush and sensual, a deeply passionate examination of one woman's spiritual rebirth, if that isn't too hackneyed and overused a phrase. Moser displays a raw carnality that is refreshing, never playing coy but giving full force to the emotional erruptions Julia faces. The plot description may seem the stuff of soap operas, but Moser is a gifted storyteller, bringing Julia to life with delicate notes that enbue her with emotional realism. There are a few jarring moments - references to The X-Files and other popular entertainments are at odds with the subtlety of Moser's prose - but overall this is a sterling novel, one to be savoured.

Montreal is brought vividly to the eye and keenly to the senses. The abrupt shift from muggy, redolent summer to grey chill and driving rain is especially evocative.

Julia's identity drift and chronic indecision perhaps dog her for a few too many chapters, needlessly slowing the pace at the book's centre. Then Moser pleasingly shifts gears. With a mix of fresh passion and subtle revelation, show more she movingly brings the story home. show less
