Dav Pilkey never lets his audience down. Each story is packed with action and memorable characters. I was very satisfied and left smiling after Ricky Ricotta's Giant Robot #1. =)
I sort of Iron Giant with mice and without any atmosphere or context. Young bullied mouse boy finds best friend in villain's refusenik robot and they defend each other. Some clever flip graphic for the final fight.
Ricky Ricotta, an elementary school student mouse, is smaller than the rest of his classmates and is constantly bullied. That is, until one day Ricky wins the friendship of a gigantic robot by freeing him from the evil scientist who created him. Ricky and his robot then embark on a number of adventures. Personally, I didn’t find much of substance in this book, either in content, writing style, or illustration, but I can see the appeal for young readers, particularly boys. It’s a short and sweet adventure story that will capture their attention and probably have them clamoring for the next book in the series.
I get asked for these all the time but this is the first time I have read one. It was easy to read but still a "chapter" book which makes beginning readers super excited to read. Ricky has been bullied and needs someone BIG to help him. Who better than the Dr. Stinky's robot....who instead of destroying the city makes a friend!
Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot by Dav Pilkey is a whimsical cartoon adventure about a mouse, robots and mosquitos. The illustrations in this book is sure to hook readers and there are 1-3 sentences per page. The book is in novel format and gives early or struggling readers confidence. The action packed fiction novel will have boys laughing with Mr. Mosquito as he attempts to invade earth.
This graphic novel series is full of gentle action/adventure stories with a big emphasis on friendship.
Genre: Fantasy
Age: beginner and intermediate
Review/Critique: Ricky is a small mouse with no friends. He gets bullied a lot and keeps waiting for his big break. A mad scientist creates a robot that isn't very evil. When he tests it out it doesn't do what he wants so he starts punishing it, but Ricky steps in and stops the mad scientist from hurting the robot anymore. Because of this Ricky and the robot become best friends and solve each others problems. This book is Fanta you because robots don't exist and mice can't talk and do normal human things.
