A little odd compared to modern books - this little girl is adaptable, willing to look for the bright side, ready to be cheerful and optimistic. Not quite Pollyanna, as she's a very real little girl with a temper, a capacity for self-pity, and a sense of mischief. Nonetheless, I approve of her attitude... it's a perspective I share and it has served me well for 57 years and counting.

There are also fascinating little details of life on a boat, life on a farm, and some small adventures. It was my youngest son's favorite book when he was young, before His Dark Materials replaced it in his estimation. I'm going to make sure he rereads it though, and decides for sure whether to keep it or let some other lucky reader have a chance at it.

I show more will investigate for more by the author.
... have begun to do so; many that are on openlibrary are not on goodreads!
